1. SuSanA South Asia regional meeting in Bhaktapur, Nepal and side event at SACOSAN V

The first SuSanA South Asia Regional meeting took place in Bhaktapur Nepal on 21 October 2013 prior to the SACOSAN V Conference. The meeting was hosted by UN Habitat and GIZ. The aim of the meeting was to provide a platform for the regional SuSanA partners for regional knowledge exchange and presenting the draft concept for a regional node. The regional node aims at bringing SuSanA closer  and better connect to its partners and members at national and regional levels. It aims at filling the gap of national and regional knowledge exchange in the sanitation sector. Discussion around the draft concept of the knowledge node and the opportunities for partner organisations in terms of hosting the node took place. Funding would be sought by the host organisation and by SuSanA for executing the management tasks of the regional node and for activities/events within the region.

Presentations and Minutes of the meeting are available here: http://www.susana.org/lang-en/meetings/side-events/173-side-events/831-oct-2013-susana-regional-meeting-in-bhaktapur-nepal

SuSanA also organised a Side Event on “How can we scale up urban sanitation for achieving the sustainable sanitation goals?” at the SACOSAN V conference on the 23 October. The presentations at this Side event  and other side events from SuSanA partners can be accessed here:  http://www.susana.org/lang-en/meetings/side-events/173-side-events/830-oct-2013-susana-side-event-in-kathmandu-nepal-sacosan-v

3. November 19 is World Toilet Day

On July 24, 2013, the UN passed the resolution to make November 19 World Toilet Day, meaning that this year, it will be celebrated as an official UN day for the first time.

The main reason for World Toilet Day is to raise awareness about the daily struggle for proper sanitation that a staggering 2.5 billion people face around the world, and to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge.

To help the purposes of such awareness raising, a social media campaign around World Toilet Day will be taking place from October 16th.

The story is this: for the first time in history, the Toilet is finally getting the respect it deserves thanks to Jack Sim from World Toilet Organisation who introduced this special day and put it on the global agenda.

What could be more appropriate to celebrate this incredible achievement than to throw a huge party for the toilet, all around the world?

Starting on Wednesday, October 16 and leading up to the toilet's big day, WASH United and partners will do exactly that. With World Toilet Organization, American Standard, Toilet Hackers, WaterAid, WSSCC, Water for People, German WASH Network & the German Foreign Office, are launching ‘Celebrate theToilet!', a fun and interactive global campaign that engages people worldwide to celebrate, honor and pay respect to the Toilet for everything it's done to save human lives.

Online users can watch animated flash videos, congratulate the toilet and participate in a photo contest by uploading images of their festivities. Offline – with partners and other toilet fans from around the world –  real-life ‘Celebrate the Toilet’ parties will be organized on November 19th - from Berlin to Singapore, Nairobi to New York! You are encouraged you to organize your own!

How to participate:

  • Like the official Celebrate the Toilet Facebook page & follow the campaign. Tell others to do the same!
  • Visit celebratethetoilet.org (live Oct. 16) and leave your congratulations on the virtual toilet wall. Also, spread the word by sharing the campaign through social media using the hashtag #CelebrateTheToilet
  • Show us how you celebrate the toilet: Participate in the photo competition! Post images via Instagram and Facebook (or email them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) using #CelebrateTheToilet & and win a year's supply LooLoo Paper

4. New page listing research that SuSanA partner organisations are conducting

(Click on the wordle above to get redirected to the research page)

As announced in the June newsmail, we invited SuSanA partners who do research in sustainable sanitation to showcase their work on a new section of the SuSanA website. This section is now available here: http://www.susana.org/lang-en/research/by-susana-partners. It is grouped by regions where the SuSanA partners are located. So far, we have listed the research activities of eleven partners from Europe, two from Asia and the Pacific, three from Sub-Saharan Africa and none from the other regions yet (which will hopefully change soon!).

The idea is that newcomers, students, researchers and SuSanA members in general can get an overview of what research in sustainable sanitation is being conducted, by whom and where. Such an overview should be very useful to the sanitation research community as a whole, not to mention the numerous contacts and collaborations that could also result from it. If you are working for a SuSanA partner organisation that is doing research and want your organisation to be represented in this section, please e-mail the SuSanA secretariat at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will gladly put your information online. In addition, if you know of important organisations who are doing research in sustainable sanitation and who are not yet SuSanA partners, kindly bring this to our attention.

5. Update on sharing results from sanitation grants of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In late 2012, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a grant to SuSanA partner Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to showcase the Foundation’s significant investments in sanitation science and technology. SEI is carrying out this project in collaboration with two further SuSanA partners, namely seecon and GIZ. The aim of the project is to engage a broad range of experts, practitioners in developing countries and sanitation enthusiasts in an open discussion on the outcomes of the Gates Foundation’s sanitation science and technology grants. The platform for this discussion is the open discussion forum of SuSanA. So far, 63 of the 85 sanitation research grants awarded by the Foundation have been introduced and discussed on the SuSanA discussion forum in five thematic categories: “Resource recovery from excreta or faecal sludge” (28 grants), “Processing technologies for excreta or faecal sludge” (25 grants), “User interface” (13 grants), “Faecal sludge transport” (3 grants), “Enabling environment and others” (16 grants). Here is now your chance to quiz the grantees about their approaches and results by using the discussion forum!

6. Overview of the new forum features

User rating functionalities: We recently added three new pieces of information to the user profile which is displayed next to a user's post: The number of “Likes received”, “Likes given” and “Karma”. This is an attempt to generate information so that users can get an idea of the "Karma" that other users have been awarded with by others on the forum. Feel free to start handing out karma points if you want to hand out a sign of esteem for a certain user (by clicking on the green plus sign to the left of someone's post). Once the system with the karma points has been going for a while, it could also be interesting to look at the ranking by users by karma points every now and again. You can access it under the Button "Forum Tools", then "Statistics" (top menu bar, the grey text on black).

For more information: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/135-questions-about-using-the-forum/5716-whats-the-deal-with-the-karma-or-how-to-estimate-the-qesteemq-of-a-user

Find user function: You can find any other registered user by clicking at the top menu bar on “Search” and then in the dropdown menu on “Find user”. Once you have found the user, you can send the person a short message (360 characters) by using the “Contact” button. Your message will be sent to the other user's e-mail address with your name and e-mail address. You can also  look at the person’s profile or his or her previous posts.

Special recognition award for forum user Julius Krischan Makowka: This is the beginning of a series, where we will highlight a particular forum member about once every month or two. In October, we gave special recognition to a forum member who has enriched the forum with his excellent posts in the past: Julius Krischan Makowka (he likes to be called Krischan or Kris). Kris is from Germany and currently works in Uganda for the NGO UWASNET. He has made the highest number of posts of all users so far (203), and has received 44 “Likes” for his posts. His posts are very detailed, to the point, easy to read and very, very helpful. The forum moderators are very impressed by his depth of knowledge in a range of technical topics; also, he even takes the time to respond to posts that may at first seem not so relevant or contain “only” basic questions of newcomers, and a discussion develops. We thank him for all these posts and his commitment! It is people like Kris who make the forum such an interesting place to be in.

Here is a link to his forum profile (visible only for logged-in users): http://forum.susana.org/forum/profile/userid-1472
More information: http://forum.susana.org/forum/categories/10-by-susana-secretariat-or-core-group/5751-forum-user-of-the-month-special-recognition-for-user-krischan-makowka

New feature button:  We are hoping to give a new twist to the forum with a feature button that advertises new and relevant issues that can be seen by any user right away. We believe this is a good idea so that users see what’s “hot” on the forum. The button can be used miscellaneously, for advertising the forum user of the month, breaking news, or any other important topic that we want the users to find out about in a quick manner. Evaluation about this new functionality will follow in the upcoming months after having used it for the first time!

New dynamic graph: we now have a new dynamic graph on our statistics page where we can see each week how the forum has performed in the last week! Click the picture below to see the graph (scroll down to second graph):

Ensemble World Toilet Organization, American Standard, Toilet Hackers, WaterAid, WSSCC, Water for People, German WASH Network & the German Foreign Office,  lancent « Celebrate theToilet!

Postez vos photos sur  Instagram, Facebook (ou envoyez-les à This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) en utilisant le #CelebrateTheToilet et gagnez un an d’approvisionnement en papier toilette LooLoo Paper !

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Publica imágenes vía Instagram y Facebook (o envíalas a This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) utilizando #CelebrateTheToilet y gana un año de aprovisionamiento de papel higiénico LooLoo Paper!

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
