Monitoring Sustainable WASH Service Delivery Symposium, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The symposium will offer a platform for presenting experiences, knowledge, models, and lessons learned on the various themes of monitoring for sustainable WASH services. Potential topics to be addressed include:
· New developments in project monitoring including: sustainability clauses, indicators, and impact assessments to hold projects accountable for the sustainability of their interventions;
· From monitoring access and functionality towards monitoring service levels and human rights;
· Sustainability score cards and other tools to measure sustainability;
· From data collection to data use: monitoring is a means to an end;
· Monitoring performance: of a country sector (Joint Sector Reviews), of service providers, of local governments, and/or of Development Partners;
· Monitoring the finance: public expenditure reviews, budget tracking (Country Status Overview reports) and the Global Annual Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water [GLAAS];
· Financing monitoring initiatives: finding the right balance between costs and benefits;
· New mobile phone technologies and Information & Communication Technologies for mapping, data collection, reporting break downs;
· Linking and harmonising monitoring between levels: global (Millennium Development Goals and post-2015 indicators), national, and local;
· Transparency of data and the opportunities of civil society to use monitoring information;
· Monitoring water safety;
· Concrete examples of how monitoring results in change, for example: of policy, funding, planning, modalities, and practice of service provision;
· The politics of monitoring: the transformation of information by collectors, analysers, and users of analysis;
· Monitoring sanitation, hygiene behaviour, Community-led Total Sanitation, WASH in schools, etc.

· IRC call for abstracts and presentations: 27 August 2012;
· Deadline for abstract submissions: 28 September 2012;
· Committee finalises selection of abstracts by: 22 October 2012;
· Notification of authors/presenters by: 31 October 2012; and sharing of paper and presentation guidelines with selected participants;
· Selected participants develop their paper(s) and/or presentation(s) during: November 2012 to January 2013;
· Selected participants submit their paper(s) and/or presentation(s) by: 14 January 2013;
· Comments from committee given to selected participants by: 31 January 2012;
· Selected participants submit their finalised paper(s) and/or presentation(s) by: 1 March 2013;
· Final symposium programme shared: 8 March 2013.
