Household access to sanitation facilities has increased faster in rural Rwanda than in any other country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Almost four million people gained access to improved sanitation between 1990 and 2008. How has Rwanda been able to achieve its remarkable progress toward achieving the sanitation MDG (Millennium Development Goals)? This Case Study highlights interrelated drivers including cultural factors, the post-genocide reconstruction process, progress in related sectors, and specific sector initiatives.
