Reaching Hand

India • Bangalore

Mission Statement:
Reaching Hand's Girls Glory project provides infrastructural and educational support to eliminate hygiene and sanitation barriers in Indian government schools, enabling young girls to continue to attend school with confidence and dignity.

Working Fields

Program Goals:
The main goal of Reaching Hand’s Girls Glory program is to prevent young girls from dropping out of school due to a lack of MHM (menstrual hygiene management) accessibility through the following:
• by destigmatizing menstruation and menstrual hygiene management (MHM)
• by bridging information gaps around menstrual hygiene management (MHM)
• by advocating for positive changes in community sanitation and hygiene norms
• by making Indian government schools period-friendly spaces

Program Objectives:
• Our girls will gain the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions about their MHM and general hygiene.
• Our girls will attend school regularly, instead of dropping out because of MHM information and infrastructure barriers.
• Our girls will develop confidence and dignity by engaging in healthy MHM methods and rejecting false, shame-inducing taboos.
• Our communities will gain awareness of MHM and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) needs in accordance with United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development and India’s Swachh Bharat initiative.

We will accomplish our goals and objectives through:
• Providing schools with toilet blocks and other sanitation and hygiene infrastructure facilities that promote preventative public health behavior
• Conducting puberty and general health & hygiene workshops to bridge information gaps and encourage healthy behavior that is contextually suitable
• Distributing basic hygiene and MHM kits to incentivize student engagement
• Working closely with school administrators, government leaders, aid organizations and most importantly, community members.
