Este reporte resalta los hallazgos de cuatro estudios de caso que describen el actual y potencial mercado de limpieza, recolección y disposición de lodos fecales en zonas periurbanas. En donde además de alta densidad poblacional, escasa planificación territorial, alta inseguridad ciudadana y una baja cobertura de servicios básicos, confluyen distintos grupos étnicos, religiosos y culturales.
El reporte muestra cómo distintos aspectos técnicos, financieros,
ambientales, sociales, regulatorios, políticos e institucionales
interactúan dándole forma a la oferta y a la demanda de cuatro mercados que cuentan con índices de cobertura de servicios de alcantarillado sanitario por debajo del promedio regional. Estos mercados son Santa Cruz (Bolivia), Ciudad de Guatemala (Guatemala), Tegucigalpa (Honduras) y
Managua (Nicaragua).
A pesar de contar con sistemas de saneamiento in situ (letrinas y excusados/inodoros), los lodos fecales y las excretas de los sistemas de saneamiento de las cuatro ciudades estudiadas frecuentemente drenan por las calles y los lodos son recogidos sin control ni tratamiento, poniendo en riesgo al medio ambiente y la salud pública.
