AsSamra plant is the primary facility for meeting the wastewater treatment needs of 3.5 million inhabitants of greater Amman area and its surroundings.
Activities:
To treat wastewater and produce treated water up to 133 million m3/year that is released into the Amman basin helping increase the water resource for irrigation (100% reuse) while simultaneously protecting the underground water from pollution. This water that is being used for irrigation helps free up fresh water for more essential usages within a very water-scarce context.

Mission

- Over the contract period of 25 years, to treat wastewater of up to 364,800 m3/day to high quality in compliance with international standards - To manage and dispose of sludge pursuant to environmentally and socially sound plan for permanent disposal or re-use of sludge - Operate and maintain the plant under strict noise and odor controls

Approach

The cost of treating this water is the lowest in Jordan even though the capital depreciation cost in included. This helped the farmers switch away from fresh water because the irrigation tariff applicable to fresh water is more expensive. Both the grant funding and the electricity self-generation contributed to significantly reducing the cost of the treatment. Such a result makes this project very affordable to the government given the context of high cost of energy. The BOT scheme ensures retention of private party's expertise and the transfer of know-how such that the plant is operated and maintained in good condition at all time.
