Iloilo Mission Hospital Wastewater Treatment Plant in Iloilo City, Philippines To construct a decentralized wastewater treatment plant Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association, BORDA

The Iloilo Mission Hospital Wastewater Treatment Plant was completed in 2009. It was designed for 290 hospital beds, including patients, staff and visitors. This Treatment Plant is one of the 69 operating DEWATS constructed with the support of BORDA in Philippines.

Wastewater generated from the Iloilo Mission Hospital has long been considered to be a major source of environmental pollution in Iloilo City. The wastewater from the hospital should be treated and disposed of in a manner that minimizes potential harm to public health and detrimental impacts on environment. BORDA and its partners in Philippines came up with an innovative wastewater treatment facility that enables the hospital to treat its wastewater cheap and effectively. The wastewater effluent generated from different sources are treated by a combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes to significantly reduce the pollution level before discharge. The treatment plant is composed of a settler followed by a series of anaerobic baffled reactors and anaerobic filters as well as an aerobic treatment step consisting of a planted gravel filter.

The DEWATS has the capacity to treat almost 300 m³ of wastewater discharged daily. The hospital wastewater sources include sinks, floor drains, showers, toilets, dish and laundry washing machines and tubs. The treated wastewater is directly discharged to a nearby creek. The DEWATs performance is monitored by DEWATS experts and effluent quality is analyzed on a regular basis.
