A Guidance Note for SDG Implementation in Jordan: Water, Energy, and Climate Change Nassar, L. (2017)

Jordan faces dire environmental challenges. The country is ranked as having one of the lowest levels of water resource availability in the world. An already difficult situation is being exacerbated by a high influx of refugees and the impacts of climate change. In addition, Jordan is one of the few energy resource poor countries in the Middle East, with government debt levels having increased by 50 per cent largely due to the interruption of the regular cheap supply of natural gas from Egypt since the start of the Arab Spring.

This is why it’s important for Jordan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 6 (access to water and sanitation for all), SDG 7 (access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all), and SDG 13 (urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

This publication aims to help demystify the environment-related SDG process in Jordan, build momentum and provide guidance at the institutional level on how to tackle the challenges associated with inter-sectorial goals through the project “Pathways Towards the Sustainable Development Goals in Jordan.”
