Join us at COP29 on Friday 15 November from 6pm to 8pm for a special side-event screening of the Holy Shit movie, which will take place outside the official programme in a relaxed, informal evening setting. After a busy day, unwind with this captivating documentary by director Rubén Abruña, which explores innovative solutions to global water and fertiliser shortages. The film takes viewers on a journey through 16 cities around the world, showing practical ways to turn sewerage and human waste into a sustainable resource, combat climate change and improve food security. At the end of the film, there will be a Q&A session with Abruña himself.
Holy Shit is a feature-length documentary directed by Rubén Abruña and produced by Thurn Film, which will be released in 2023. The film puts climate resilience at its core, urging viewers to recognise sustainable sanitation and resource recovery as essential strategies for adapting to water scarcity and flooding. It shows different innovative solutions from around the world, such as Hamburg and Geneva, which are leading the way in producing electricity and fertiliser through non-sewered sanitation systems, or the Poop Pirates in Uganda, who are promoting co-composting within communities in Kampala. Through these diverse examples, Holy Shit highlights the climate change adaptation and mitigation potential of sustainable sanitation, demonstrating how it can respond to climate impacts such as flooding and water scarcity, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional energy and fertilizer production
