Makerere University

Makerere University is Uganda's largest and oldest university. It was first established as a technical school in 1922. Makerere University offers Bachelors, masters and PhD programmes. Makerere University has approximately 40,000 students of whom 5-10% are graduate students. Female students comprise about 45% of the total student population. Approximately 12,000 students graduate from Makerere University annually. There are approximately 3,500 International Students at Makerere University, from over 10 countries in and outside Africa. The University employs about 3,000 staff (of whom, 60% are Academic Staff, 11% Administrative Staff and 29% Support staff). The colleges involved in teaching, research and consultancy in topics relating to sustainable sanitation are College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES); College of Business and Management Sciences (COBAMS); College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT); College of Health Sciences; College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS); and College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB). Staff and students from the different colleges are often involved in inter-disciplinary research in the areas of sanitation technology including treatment systems, societal aspects including gender issues, social marketing, as well as financial and economic aspects of sustainable sanitation.
