West Africa Sanitation Policy and Advocacy Activator

Purpose

To advocate for effective safely managed non-sewered sanitation policies in francophone West Africa

Activities

To advocate for effective safely managed non-sewered sanitation policies, aligned with SDG6, in francophone West Africa, contribution to health, economic and gender equality outcomes for the region’s underserved.

Since 2017, Speak Up Africa has been working with Niyel, an advocacy and public affairs organization based in Dakar, on the West African Sanitation Policy and Advocacy Activator project. The joint supports other advocates in launching successful, sustainable and impactful sanitation campaigns.

The Speak Up Africa Niyel Consortium work closely with two Dakar-based research institutes, Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale (IPAR) and Consortium pour le Recherche Économique et Social (CRES). These two research institutes will provide evidence-based research that will support the development of advocacy strategies tailored to local contexts.

Speak up Africa and Niyel are working through a three-tiered approach as the cornerstone for accelerating results. The model targets direct improvement in the lives of people living in select urban centers, an enabling policy environment at the national level and finally a regional commitment around strengthening non sewered sanitation in Francophone Africa’s growing cities.

Current state of affairs (Sept. 2018):

After several months of research and analysis about non-sewered sanitation in West Africa, the consortium organized three national workshops, one per country, to elaborate national advocacy strategy about non-sewered sanitation, with all the key stakeholders of the sector.

Biggest successes so far (Sept. 2018):

- Situational analysis conducted to determine cities with the most potential for impact.
- National sanitation guidelines and political documents reviewed.
- Stakeholders mapping elaborated in each country, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, in order to know which actors are more powerful and active in sanitation.
- Briefing sessions held in each country to meet and discuss national advocacy strategy with the key stakeholders in sanitation and introduce the opportunity fund provided byt Speak Up Africa and Niyel for civil society organizations.
- Multi-stakeholders fora held in Senegal, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.
- Training workshops with journalists conducted to build their capacity to effectively and accurately report on sanitation trends and create content
