Reinforcing capacity of African sanitation operators on non-sewer and fecal sludge management systems through peer-to-peer learning Partnerships (RASOP-Africa) To expand non-sewered sanitation in five cities in Sub-Saharan Africa through the development of city sanitation plans and bankable projects, using a peer-exchange mentorship approach

This investment will build local capacity for planning, designing and implementation of non-sewer sanitation and fecal sludge management (FSM) and result in practical plans and bankable projects for urban FSM in the region.

Through its Water Operators partnerships Program for Africa (WOP Africa), the African Water Association will develop strong partnerships focused on innovations in urban fecal sludge management (FSM) and specifically how to engage with smaller-scale private providers of (non-sewer) FSM services.

AfWA will act as a practical platform, both building and providing necessary skills through training, peer-exchange and knowledge management to spread best practices in FSM. This partnership platform will enable the uptake and practical use of the Urban Sanitation Toolbox, a consolidated set of modular, simple and user-friendly tools for managers currently under development by the Foundation. Capacity development and other activities will assist cities in planning and designing better urban sanitation programs.

Approach

This investment will link to similar efforts in South Asia, and will eventually realize a global platform and network for urban non-sewer sanitation innovation.
