Construction of interim wastewater network in Za'atari Camp, Jordan To ensure that all household wastewater sources are connected to the Waste Water network and compatible with the future Main Waste Water Network

The Interim Wastewater Network (WWN) project consists of:
- the conception and designing of the principles for the WWN,
- the designing of the WWN as clusters,
- the procurement and installation of the PRC tanks (pre-casted concrete tanks),
- installing lateral pipelines from the household to the PRC tank),
- installing solid-free pipelines from the PRC tanks to the existed steel tanks,
- casting and installing inspection chambers (ICs),
- connecting households to the WWN,
- internal plumbing for selected households,
- backfilling the private pits,
- constructing private toilets for vulnerable cases,
- providing a large amount of cash for work opportunities for the refugees (community based approach project).

Mission

The objectives of the construction of an Interim Wastewater network in Za'atari camp were: - To improve the general sanitation conditions and minimize the risk of environmental hazards and the spreading of diseases in all ACTED Districts - To ensure that all household wastewater sources are connected to the Waste Water network and compatible with the future Main Waste Water Network - To provide a proper wastewater solution to over 35,000 Syrian refugees (around 7,000 households in 6 districts). - To reduce the number of wastewater outlets discharging wastewater in inappropriate ways (by supporting Internal household plumbing connections) from the existing 10,774 outlets to 8,239 outlets, and connect all the wastewater outlets to WWN system. - To ensure easy access for further wastewater source connections to IWWM network (eliminate haphazard connections to sewer lines and to holding tanks), resulting in reduced sewer blockages and wastewater leakages. - To improve community ownership of sewage network through community engagement and Cash for Work, and ensure future maintenance and sustainability of the WWN, which would be done by refugees. - To assist the most vulnerable refugees in the construction of household private WASH facilities. Around 12% of Za’atari Camp's population does not have private toilets and around 48% does not have private shower or bathing place.
