Addressing WASH crisis in Mirpur for garments workers (Bangladesh) Lindex will support WaterAid to improve WASH services for slum dwellers in Mirpur. Water and sanitation facilities will be provided and hygiene behaviour improved, in the community and schools. Women & girls will play a key role in achieving change.
Poor access to Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities is a reality in the Mirpur slums situated at North Dhaka City Corporation in Bangladesh, an area in which a majority of the community members work in one of the many garment factories. This affects everyone and especially women and girls. In Bangladesh, women and girls are responsible for managing drinking and cooking water for the family, and when access to safe water is poor this takes a lot of time which could be spent on studying or earning and income. There are no female toilets in the community, which makes it uncomfortable for girls and women, especially during their menstruation. Often, they await darkness to go to the toilet in the open and risk being assaulted. Poor access to WASH facilities in the low income communities and school in Mirpur is causing poor health of these communities. But, this can change!
Lindex will support WaterAid to improve WASH services for slum dwellers in Mirpur. Water and sanitation facilities will be provided in the community and schools, and hygiene behaviour will be improved. Women and girls will play a key role in achieving change, and we will build their capacity to influence hygiene behaviour and promote and manage WASH services. This will ensure sustainability of facilities. Over three years, 4,500 people will get access to safe drinking water, 5,000 people will get access to improved sanitation, 100 adolescent girls will promote good hygiene behaviour and 300 women will become entrepreneurs within WASH services. This three years project will focus to cover three broader arena namely;

1. Increase access to clean drinking water, improved sanitation and influence hygiene behaviour among low income communities and schools. 2. Create a cadre of adolescent girls to be Change Agents for hygiene behaviour change in slum communities. 3.
