Phase 1:
Title: "Expansion of the Sanitation Network into the SuSanA Community"
Duration: Nov. 2012 - Apr. 2014
The purpose of this project was to transfer ownership and control of the closed-group Sanitation Network that was managed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Water, Sanitation & Health (WSH) Team to the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) as part of a broader publicly available discussion forum.
Primary objectives of this project:
• Assume ownership and control of the Sanitation Network (the Sanitation Network was a closed discussion forum only available to BMGF grantees which ran from 2011 until early 2013)
• Make the Sanitation Network a public-facing community
Primary activities to achieve the objectives:
• Transfer the existing content and membership to a dedicated section of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) online community (open discussion forum),
• Transition the management of the Sanitation Network to Stockholm Environment Institute (and its respective partners/sub-contractors),
• Open the Sanitation Network to the general public.
• Technology resources will be uploaded to the SuSanA library and ‘marketed’ in the Forum for discussion (the SuSanA library will be available to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation WSH Team for dissemination of project reports to a wider public audience).

Phase 2:
Title: "Supporting online knowledge management, dissemination and peer discussions of the BMGF WSH projects"
Duration: July 2014 - Dec. 2015
The project was aimed at contributing to the knowledge management and dissemination that the BMGF is carrying out for its sanitation and hygiene projects. These services included launching each project on the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance webpage and Discussion Forum and to provide outreach capacity in order for the project to be seen and understood by targeted individuals and organizations that work within the WSH sector.
The activities of the grant were clustered to support the following three main outcomes:
1. Improvements made to the structure, user-friendliness and ease of navigation of the SuSanA Discussion Forum, including basic curator functions for newcomers and non-experts
2. The relevant BMGF grants, as well as closely related projects, introduced on the SuSanA Discussion Forum and scrutinized in a constructive and supported manner (moderated process)
3. The grantees and non-grantees actively engaging with each other in a networked community of practice, where people know each other, using a combination of online and face-to-face means exchanging results and experiences

Phase 3
Title: "Supporting SuSanA and the broader Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Community of Practice through an online platform”
Duration: Oct. 2016 - Dec. 2018
The funding was for a consortium of organizations and people consisting of SEI (lead), GIZ, Oxfam, WaterAid, and some additional consultants like Diane Kellogg (located in Boston, USA), Steffen Eisser (Germany) and Elisabeth von Muench (Ostella Consulting)
The project was designed to have three key outcomes:
1) Improved use of SuSanA Platform by identified target groups, through a clear communications plan and platform improvements;
2) Demonstrable improvements in the impact that use of the SuSanA Platform has on members’ work in sanitation;
3) Strengthened governance and institutional sustainability of SuSanA as reflected in an operational plan that includes a plan for funding the budget needed to assure the future of SuSanA.
