One of the largest constraints that cleaners experience is the lack of WASH, and formal training on IPC, PPE, and hand hygiene. A needs assessment study conducted in 56 healthcare facilities throughout Bangladesh, India, The Gambia, and Zanzibar reported that on average less than a third delivered formal training to their cleaning staff. 4 Training is essential in ensuring a safe and clean healthcare environment, in establishing sustainable continuity of services, and providing a line of defense against COVID-19. The healthcare environment is innately linked to WASH and IPC and there is a clear need to empower these forgotten actors by creating awareness among key stakeholders, by providing cleaners with the necessary training and supplies, and by addressing institutional hurdles. In doing so, we ensure respect for cleaners and the public they serve and move forward and ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more dignified healthcare environment for all who visit.
