Globally, at least two billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces1. As result of microbial contamination with faeces, it poses the greatest risk to drinking-water safety. In 2010, the UN General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation. Everyone has the right to sufficient, continuous, safe, acceptable, physically accessible, and affordable water for personal and domestic use. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 6.1 calls for universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water. The Bangladesh government has a strategy to meet the SDG water target. The right to safe water is recognized as a foundation of all other human rights. Bangladesh has made significant progress regarding universal access to improved water sources but access to basic safe drinking water is still low at 39.2 per cent (Joint Monitoring Programme, 2020).
