In the south of the nation, in the Galachipa Upazila, lives Galachipa, a municipality from the Patuakhali area, under the Barishal Division. The geographical coordinates of Galachipa are 22°09'50.04"N and 90° 25' 50.16" E . Galachipa Municipality is situated in the Patuakhali District. The district is bordered on the north by Barisal, the east by Bhola District, the south by the Gulf of Bengal, and the west by Barguna District. According to the population census in 2011 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the population of Galachipa Municipality was 21,200. The urban population growth in Galachipa is 2.01% per year. As per information obtained from a Key Informant Interview (KII) at the municipality, the present population is around 25,721. The household survey results show that majority of the occupation is business (54%), followed by private service (14%) and agriculture (1%) .
The city does not have a dedicated sewerage system and most sanitation systems available in the town are classified as onsite systems (85.1%). The main types of toilet facilities are septic tanks connected to a soak pit, to an open drain, to a water body or to open ground, lined tanks or lined pits, with no outlet or overflow and unlined pits.
The outcome of the SFD graphic shows that only twenty percent (20%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining eighty percent (80%) is classified as unsafely managed. The unsafely managed excreta originate from wastewater not delivered to treatment (15%), Faecal Sludge (FS) both contained and not contained - not delivered to treatment (50%), FS not contained - not emptied (14%) and 1% of supernatant not delivered to treatment.
