The practical guidelines for designing climate-resilient sanitation projects provide a framework for developing projects that address sanitation and climate change, including adaptation and mitigation strategies. It supports governments and development partners seeking Green Climate Fund (GCF) funding for climate resilient sanitation services, which can better cope with and be restored after climate events, while reducing carbon emissions. They mean healthier populations and ecosystems, and contribute to the circular economy.
The guidelines describe the sanitation and climate crisis; Green Climate Fund investment criteria and key strategies for climate resilient sanitation; how to conduct sanitation related climate risk assessments; how to measure emissions from sanitation systems; and potential responses and interventions.
Governments and partners can use the guidelines to include sanitation in their proposals, or to develop specific climate resilient sanitation proposals when applying for funding from the Green Climate Fund.
