Chakaria Municipality is located within the Chakaria Sub-District (Upazila) situated in the Cox’s Bazar District (Zila) of Chattogram Division. The geographical coordinates of Chakaria are 21°47'9.96" N and 92°04'40.08"E. It is bordered by the Upazilas of Lama and Naikhongchhari on the east, the Upazilas of Lohagara and Banshkhali on the north, the Upazilas of Cox's Bazar Sadar and Ramu on the south, and the Upazilas of Maheshkhali and Pekua on the west.
According to the population census in 2011 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the Chakaria city population was 72,669 the urban population growth in Chakaria is 1.8% per year. Considering 10% floating population, such as farmers and traders coming to the city every day, the present (2023) population is estimated to be around 99,018. The household survey results show that majority of the occupation is business (42%), followed by labourer (11%), private service (10%), and agriculture (7%).
The outcome of the SFD graphic shows that only twenty one percent (21%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining seventy nine percent (79%) is classified as unsafely managed.
