City sanitation planning package for Dar es Salaam Bright-Davies, L. et al. (2016)

This City Sanitation Planning (CSP) package approach for Dar es Salaam was created in response to the need for a simple, fast and flexible tool for determining “which sanitation solutions go where”. CSP has the following advantages:
• Can keep up with rapid urban growth and is fast to update as new data (e.g. satellite imagery, open-street maps, etc.) becomes available
• Broad and inclusive coverage of all areas of the city
• Field surveys are only required for selected areas prior to implementation, saving time and money

CSP has been designed to assist decision-makers and practitioners involved in urban environmental sanitation planning in Dar es Salaam, such as:
• Municipalities
• Water / wastewater utilities
• Sector regulators
• Service providers
• City council / local governments
• Urban planners
• Urban developers
• Donors
• NGOs

Part 1 "Urban environmental sanitation: Integrating decentralised solutions” provides the rationale for providing alternative environmental sanitation solutions in rapidly growing urban contexts.

Part 2 “5 step planning guide: Which solutions go where?“ presents a selection of options for improving environmental sanitation in urban areas, with a focus on decentralised options as an alternative to conventional systems. Dar es Salaam will be used as an example, as the city (like many rapidly urbanising cities in developing countries) is struggling to provide adequate service coverage to all citizens.

Part 3 "Catalogue of environmental sanitation solutions: For urban areas” provides a glossary of all of the environmental sanitation systems and service options mentioned in Part 2.

This 3-part CSP package has also been incorporated into an online interactive tool which you can find below. This tool can be used for mapping the different physical and socio-economic that influence urban environmental sanitation, as well as providing recommendations for “which solutions go where?”
