Low-cost sewerage Mara, D. D. (1996)

Research and development undertaken by the World Bank during 1976-1986 has shown clearly that possession, proper use and maintenance of a sanitation facility are more important, in terms of improving health, than the actual sanitation technology employed, provided that it is affordable and socioculturally acceptable. Nevertheless, sanitation technology, sanitation technology choices have to be made, and the principal choice is between on-site and off-site systems.

This article reviews these low-cost sewerage options (settled sewerage and simplified sewerage), their potential and their limitations. It also provides guidance on how to choose the most appropriate option, and gives examples of their successful application.
