Sanitation improvements at Navsarjan Boarding Schools, Gujarat, India Draft. Case study of sustainable sanitation projects Macwan, M., Wafler, M., Heeb, J. (2009)

This case study covers an upgrading school sanitation project. 3 schools were provided with UDDTs serving approximately 210 pupils each. The three villages with the Boarding schools are situated in remote, water scarce areas without any connection to public water supply. Drinking water has to be hauled by trucks from the nearest villages. Today, each school uses ecological sanitation systems for its toilet needs. These systems include elevated urine-diversion dehydration. These toilets have been constructed for the separate collection of urine and the hygienically safe treatment of faeces. Further the system includes greywater treatment. An additional collection system has been provided for the discharge of greywater. The water trickles through the filter and is collected before being reused for irrigation purposes. The “compost” and urine are applied as soil conditioner and nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer to the flower beds, kitchen gardens, etc. of the schools. Pupils and teachers jointly do day-to-day operation and maintenance. The project gives an example to promote sustainable sanitation in schools. The project raised the awareness amongst the pupils of the importance of sanitation, health and hygiene. Construction and labour costs for establishing a single sanitation centre add up to approximately Euro 5,500. The Planning for the Project was done by Seecon International Gmbh, Switzerland in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), Germany. The project was executed by the local Navsarjan Trust, India, which runs the three schools.
