This report describes the current “state of the art” in ecological sanitation (ecosan) and determines a) the nature of processes taking place in the vault of a urine-diversion toilet; and b) the relevant pathogen destruction parameters in order to increase understanding of the health aspects of UD toilet operation and maintenance (O&M), as well as safety criteria for use of the processed excreta.
