UDDTs implemented via CBOs and Water Services Trust Fund, Nyanza, Western and other provinces, Kenya Case study of sustainable sanitation projects Rieck, C. (2010)

This case study describes a pilot project that implemented double vault UDDTs in rural and peri-urban areas of Kenya and reached in total 10,000 beneficiaries with around 1000 household and school toilets. The EcoSan Promotion Project (EPP) was financed by the European Union, Sida and GTZ. The latter was the implementating agency. The construction of toilets was done in a participatory way with CBOs and beneficiaries who had to provide around 25% of contribution in terms of locally available materials and unskilled labour. Toilets were always built in clusters of 10 to 15 toilets for one CBO including a primary school. The process was closly assisted by project engineers who coordinated the various software and hardware activities with the communities and local authorities. At a later stage the Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF) also implemented UDDTs in rural areas, but only in small numbers.
