Capacity Building for Ecological Sanitation Concepts for ecologically sustainable sanitation in formal and continuing education UNESCO/IHP, GTZ (2006)

The main aim of this guideline is to provide support for academic institutes, training organisations and individuals in developing training and education material for ecological sanitation, and to therefore help close the gap between existing knowledge of professionals, scientists, technicians and school pupils regarding sanitation and what is actually necessary to move towards sustainability. The guideline looks at the paradigm shift in sanitation in three ways. Firstly, it focuses on the changes needed to the sanitation system itself, and presents a vision of the new paradigm and its impact on the sectors related to water and sanitation (e.g. health and hygiene, solid waste and wastewater management, water resources management, natural resources management, environment, agriculture, urban planning, poverty reduction, food security, job creation, micro and macro economic development). The second focus is on the educational system, especially as it relates to the training of water and environmental professionals and practitioners, as well as to brief and influence policy makers. The third relates to other aspects of knowledge management besides education. The text aims to serve the educational practitioner and new comer by providing a review of the ecosan concept and of how to include the topic in training and capacity building programmes. A series of practical examples of ecosan trainings are included in the annex and are intended to form the start up of a knowledge base on ecosan training materials.
